CWL Saturday: Comebacks, Close Calls and a Power Surge
Palm Springs, Calif. - The Alberta Grizzly defeated the British Columbia Bombers 12-7 Saturday morning on the auxiliary field. Tyler Smith put the Grizzly up early with a three-run shot to right field in the first. The Bombers trailed 7-0 through three frames but quickly found themselves back in the game following a 4-run fourth inning. Jeffrey Reseigh’s leadoff solo homer in the 6th sparked a 3-run inning and tied the game 7-7. The back-and-forth nature of the game continued as Grizzly scored five in the bottom frame to take a 12-7 lead and never looked back. Grizzly third baseman Kaehukai Young went 4-for-4 with a double, three runs batted in and a run scored. Bombers first baseman Jack Halloran went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. The Grizzly earned its first win of the season and improved to 1-2. The Bombers fall to 1-2 and take on the Oregon Lumberjacks at 10 a.m. Sunday at Palm Springs Stadium.
After a competitive seven innings between the Palm Springs Chill and the Oregon Lumberjacks, the Chill ended up victorious with a slight, 3-2 win on Saturday at Palm Springs Stadium. The Lumberjacks had a late opportunity to tie the game following Zain Zinicola’s RBI single to put his team within a run. Trailing 3-2 with a runner in scoring position ahead of him, Zinicola was thrown out at second to end the game trying to take an extra base on his RBI single. The Chill’s AJ Moreno, a Cal State LA alum, finished with a win and 5 innings pitched. Moreno struck out eight Lumberjacks. The Jacks Garret Bevacqua finished with two hits, a walk and a run. In his debut, Josh Tobacca earned a two-inning save for the Chill. The Lumberjacks will play at 10 a.m. on Sunday while the Chill have the day off.
The second game of the day at Palm Springs Stadium created a big offensive blast from the Power. Palm Springs’ home team notched 11 runs in the third inning, helping create a 12-4 win. Former Kansas Jayhawk Mike Koszewski had a two-RBI hit in the inning, and was aided by Dawson Szymanski’s two-run double. Infielder Sevon Battle singled twice in the inning. With A’s pitchers Etan Alexander and Dominick Castillo calming the tempo later on in the game, the A’s put up a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Stan King had an RBI single in the seventh, but the A’s failed to comeback, losing 12-4. The A’s will play the Grizzly at 9:30 a.m. on the Aux Field on Sunday. The Power will take the day off.
