Keep Showing Up: A Summer Note to Coachella Valley Business Owners
Every successful business owner has seasons where the phone rings less, foot traffic slows, and doubt gets louder than confidence. The businesses that thrive in October, November, and beyond are usually the ones that refused to disappear in July, August, and September.
Here are some tips for the summer from your chamber of commerce leadership:
Stay visible, even when business is quiet.
People can't buy from businesses they don't remember. Keep posting. Keep networking. Keep introducing yourself. Visibility compounds — the customer who sees you ten times in July may become your biggest client in December.
Relationships are your greatest marketing strategy.
Every coffee meeting, Chamber event, handshake, and follow-up email is planting a seed. Very few seeds bloom the day they're planted. Business is built on trust, and trust takes time.
Use the slowdown as your preparation season.
Update your website. Refresh your social media. Organize your CRM. Train your staff. Clean your storefront. Refine your elevator pitch. The businesses scrambling in October are usually the ones that rested in July instead of preparing.
Don't confuse a slow season with a failed business.
A slow month isn't a verdict. It's a chapter. Every industry has cycles — especially here in the Coachella Valley. Don't let one season convince you to abandon something you've spent years building.
Celebrate progress you can't yet measure.
Maybe the sales haven't arrived, but you've met fifty new people. Maybe you've doubled your online engagement. Maybe you've become known as someone who always shows up. Those wins matter, because they're building momentum you won't see until later.
This is also where a Chamber earns its keep. At the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce, we build the rooms where those seeds get planted — the lunch meetings that gather the region's decision makers, the networking events where a handshake becomes a contract months later, the programs that bring the community out to our local businesses during the very season everyone assumes is quiet. Gathering people isn't a nice extra. It's the work. And summer is exactly when it matters most.
Recently I recognized one of our Chamber members for consistently showing up. He creates videos, attends networking events, supports local nonprofits, and invests in this community every chance he gets. Afterward, he quietly thanked me — and admitted he'd been feeling defeated.
That stopped me in my tracks. Here was someone doing everything right, and even he was wondering whether it was enough. It reminded me how many of us are carrying struggles no one else can see.
The Coachella Valley has always been a community that succeeds together. Summer asks us to do something difficult: believe before we see the results. Keep opening your doors. Keep introducing yourself. Keep supporting your neighbors. Keep believing in the business you built.
One customer can change a day. One opportunity can change a year. One season should never determine your future.
The businesses that endure aren't always the ones that had the easiest road. They're the ones that kept showing up long enough for opportunity to find them.
Shop local and shop small, Coachella Valley.
