$50,000 Grant Will Help Unhoused Seniors Find Hope and Homes

Palm Desert, Calif., (February 27, 2025) – A $50,000 Impact Grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation will help Coachella Valley Rescue Mission (CVRM) provide essential services to the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population—individuals over 55 years old. The funds will support emergency shelter, food, and long-term assistance for this particular group of vulnerable individuals in the Coachella Valley.

“This grant will allow us to expand our outreach to seniors in need, ensuring they receive the care, dignity, and support they deserve,” said Darla Burkett, Executive Director of CVRM.

Founded in 1971, CVRM serves as a refuge for individuals of all ages and families experiencing homelessness. The mission provides a full spectrum of services, including emergency shelter, case management, job training, and medical assistance, helping individuals regain independence and stability. With the increasing number of seniors facing housing insecurity, CVRM is expanding its programs to meet their unique needs.

“Many older adults have worked hard their entire lives but are now facing unexpected challenges,” said Catharine Reed, Vice President of Charitable Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “We saw what the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission was doing to actively address this concern in our community, and we wanted to support that effort.”

CVRM is currently aiming to raise $250,000 through its “No Show Gala” themed “Show Your Love! Helping Seniors Find Home and Hope.” Without event expenses, funds raised will go farther to help this important cause. Donations of any amount are gratefully accepted.

“By providing essential services and compassionate care, CVRM is making a lasting impact in our community,” said Jerry Upham, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates KESQ News Channel 3.

The Berger Foundation presents Impact Grants through a partnership with News Channel 3. Representatives from both entities look for local 501(c)3 nonprofits to recognize for their outstanding work to improve people’s lives and help those in need. Impact Grants are awarded on the concept that through service, funding, and awareness, we are “Making a Difference Together.” Beyond the funds, each organization also receives media coverage about its mission across a variety of News Channel 3’s platforms, including News Channel 3 News at 4 and kesq.com.
