Turning the Shoulder Season into Local Momentum
By Katie Slimko-Tuvell, President & CEO, Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce
In the Coachella Valley, we’re accustomed to a rhythm built around festivals, sun-soaked weekends, and a swell of visitors during peak season. The energy is unmistakable, the momentum palpable. But the true test—and the true opportunity—comes in the months that follow those peak days when crowds thin and the calendar opens up. Rather than viewing this as a lull, we should see it as a shoulder season: a period that invites us to lean in, to innovate, and to prove that our business community is resilient, year-round, and ready to grow together.
This is a moment for community leadership that is practical, hopeful, and action-oriented. The Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce exists to turn every season into a platform for collaboration—where local businesses, residents, and public partners align around shared priorities: sustaining jobs, fostering opportunity, and ensuring that the Coachella Valley remains a premier place to live, work, and shop. Our job isn’t to wait out the slower months; it’s to shape them into momentum that benefits every neighborhood— in Rancho Mirage and beyond – take a look at our Member’s Map!
First, we acknowledge a simple truth: seasonality affects our local economy. Even as the summer heat gradually fades, the needs of families, small businesses, and service providers don’t disappear. They shift. Rent, payroll, inventory, and customer expectations adapt to a different pace and a different audience. The opportunity lies in meeting that shift with purposeful, coordinated action. The shoulder season is not a temporary pause—it’s a chance to deepen relationships, to test new ideas, and to build a more resilient, year-round marketplace.
How do we seize this moment? The Chamber is placing a clear, concrete bet on three pillars that align with our core mission: connection, visibility, and opportunity.
- Connection: deepen cross-community collaboration
- We’ll amplify programs that knit together Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, and surrounding neighborhoods. That means more joint marketing, more shared events, and more opportunities for local partners to cross-pollinate ideas and customers.
- We’ll invite residents and business owners to participate in more mid-season gatherings—networking luncheons, roundtables, and community problem-solving sessions—that surface needs and unlock practical solutions.
- Visibility: keep local businesses in front of audiences all year long
- The Shop Local Guide becomes a year-round catalyst, not a seasonal tool. Ads, listings, and partner spotlights will be positioned to reach both locals and visitors who plan off-peak experiences, staycations, and weekend getaways.
- Membership benefits will be highlighted as tools for steady growth, with targeted promotions that help small shops remain relevant when demand shifts.
- Opportunity: turn seasonality into concrete economic benefits
- We’ll develop shoulder-season campaigns that encourage steady spending—specials, bundles, and cross-promotions that pair dining, entertainment, and retail with local services. Taste of Summer, Rancho Mirage is ahead!
- We’ll partner with hotels, attractions, and schools to create experiences that draw people to our communities during slower months, turning a downshift into a fresh influx of visitors and repeat customers.
This approach isn’t about shrinking expectations; it’s about expanding possibilities. It’s about choosing to see our valley as a year-round business community where every season has potential. It’s about empowering every resident and every business owner to contribute to a shared vision of vibrant, sustainable local commerce.
What does this mean for you, as a member of our community, and for our chamber’s members and staff? It means we’re asking for focused, practical participation:
- Residents: choose local, share your positive experiences, and encourage others to discover what our small businesses offer in every season.
- Business owners: consider how your offerings can align with shoulder-season needs—specials that fit a slower pace, packages that attract locals, and opportunities to advertise in the Shop Local Guide to sustain visibility.
- Community partners and volunteers: join committees, help shape off-season programming, and provide feedback on what would most help your neighborhood thrive.
- Local institutions and policymakers: use the chamber as a partner to coordinate transportation, events, and marketing that support year-round activity and equitable access to opportunities.
We are committed to transparent, data-informed progress. The chamber will share regular updates on engagement levels, revenue targets, and member feedback, and we will adapt our programs to reflect what’s working and what needs refinement. Our aim is not only survival through the shoulder season but a deliberate strategy that fuels growth, strengthens trust, and expands opportunity for every corner of our valley.
In this moment, I’m reminded of the power of community leadership to turn challenges into catalysts. We’ve seen what’s possible when businesses collaborate, when residents voice needs, and when organizations commit to shared outcomes. The shoulder season gives us a mirror—and a map. It shows us where we are and points the way to where we can go together.
So here’s my invitation to you: let’s lean into the shoulder season with intention and optimism. Shop local. Advertise in the Shop Local Guide. Attend community conversations. Volunteer for a committee. Share your ideas for how we can keep our economy moving when the peak season ends. If we commit to action now, we will not only weather the changing tides—we will chart a course to a stronger, more inclusive, year-round future for the Coachella Valley.

Together, we can turn the shoulder season into momentum—one local purchase, one partnership, and one shared commitment at a time.
