Offense Sets the Tone Again on High-Scoring Tuesday in the CWL
Tuesday featured loads of offensive explosions at the backfield behind Palm Springs Stadium, starting off with the matchup between the Alberta Grizzly and the British Columbia Bombers. Orlando Balderas and Kevin Consolazio faced off against each other on the mound against two dangerous offenses. The Bombers were the first to strike with two runs on three hits in the second inning before the Grizzly offense answered back with seven runs in the top of the third inning which would be the difference in the game for the latter. The Grizzly would win by a huge margin of eight runs over the Bombers in a 16-8 affair. Despite the loss, Shane Skelly would have a season day with two home runs, a double, and a triple for a grand total of five runs batted in. The Grizzly would cap off a great day on offense with Kaehukai Young, Joseph Eichelberger, and Nicholas Chavez going deep in the late innings. The Grizzly would snap a four game winning streak for British Columbia. The Bombers will finish off their regular season playing the Chill at the stadium, while the Grizzly take on the Oregon Lumberjacks at the ballpark as well in the morning of February 11.
The Washington Blue Sox took down the Canada A’s 11-7 Tuesday morning at Palm Springs Stadium. The A’s only lead of the game came early following a solo shot from Miguel Agramonte. The Blue Sox hung eight runs in the third as they batted around the lineup. Joseph Esparza, Fran Gross, Jose de la Cruz, AJ Karosas and Max Samson all drove in runs with a base hit and led 8-1. The A’s never backed down and chipped away at the seven-run deficit, scoring two runs in the third and four more in the fourth. The tying and go-ahead runs were aboard against reliever Josh Nielsen in the bottom of the fifth when the A’s trailed 8-7. Nielsen worked out of the jam with a flyball to center and an inning-ending double play. The Sox added three more insurance runs late to provide some cushion. All nine Blue Sox starters reached base safely while Bubba Thompson finished 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and three scored three runs. The Blue Sox improve to 12-3 and face the Manitoba North Stars (13-2) on the auxiliary field at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The A’s are now 5-10 and face the Palm Springs Power (6-9) on the auxiliary field at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on the final day of the regular season.
In the second game at the backfield, the Power were taking on the Oregon Lumberjacks in a must win scenario in order to avoid a potential last seed position in the standings. Logan Hokuf on the mound for the Power would go for six innings pitched with only three runs given up and four strikeouts on the day with Jayge Campbell closing out the seventh. The Lumberjacks on a bullpen day brought out Cheng-Wei Lin to the mound and would be able to get through much of the game, but the first inning proved to be the difference. The Power scored seven runs in just the first inning and would tack on more later on in the game. The Power grabbed the win 11-3 over the Lumberjacks with homeruns from Jason Leon and Emilio Barrera. Ryan Wheeler would make a four inning relief outing, but by then, the game was already out of hand. The Jacks did manage to get nine hits total on offense, but left nine on the bases. Lumberjacks would fall to 6-9 on the season and remain in the middle of the pack in the standings, while the Power got a much needed win to tie Oregon with their record. Lumberjacks finish off their regular season tomorrow against the Alberta Grizzly in the first game at the stadium, while the Power finish their season against Paul Noce’s Canada A’s at the backfield at 11:30am.
In Tuesday’s second game at the stadium, the Manitoba North Stars beat the Palm Springs Chill 10-1. Manitoba pitching nearly shut out the Chill, and the first run for Palm Springs was scored when Jesse Robinson walked home Nick Chuisano with two outs in the seventh. Starter David Clarke and reliever David Reckers provided four scoreless innings for Manitoba. On the other end, Chill reliever AJ Moreno and Tzu Han Lin allowed a majority of the North Stars runs in the later innings. Manitoba put up five runs in the sixth inning and three in the fifth to create a lopsided result from what was a close game. Third baseman Derek Gellos shined the most for the Stars, collecting three hits, a triple and an RBI. The North Stars will play the Washington Blue Sox at 9:00 a.m. on the backfield on Wednesday. The Chill will face the Bombers at the stadium at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
